Spoilers ahead
Another great episode! I’d have to say the biggest surprise was the Locke met Widmore on the island in 1954. Why did Widmore leave? Did he push the “frozen donkey wheel” at some point? Was he kicked off the island?
Very cool that the very person that sent Alpert to see Locke was… Locke!
Good to see Desmond stand up to Widmore, and interesting that Widmore was worried what might happen to Penny. Strange that he asked whether she was sick or not.
You know, at this rate, the 815ers on the island are going to see Danielle pretty soon.
The fact that Desmond’s work was funded by Widmore wasn’t that much of surprise, but seeing that girl in a vegetative state (sure looks like time travel sickness to me!) sure was. Why would Daniel leave her? He wouldn’t… unless he was forced to… by Widmore. Widmore probably threatened to pull the plug on that girl’s treatment if Faraday didn’t go along with what Widmore wanted.
Theories:
I’ll bet “Elle” (the girl with the gun) is really Mrs. Hawking, Faraday’s mother. Why? Accent, height, and age. Plus it would be a nice tie-in for Mrs. Hawking’s interest in the island…. She might want to get back too, just lke Widmore.
Alpert doesn’t age. Some of The Others do (like Widmore, at least). Ben aged too. That might mean there are two classes of Others. Some age, some don’t. Perhaps the ones that do age are recruited onto the island, while the Others that don’t age were always there. At this point, I’m going to have to attribute this “no aging” thing to Alpert being “dead”.
Now, “dead”, I think is a very relative term on this show. Just because someone appears dead, it doesn’t mean you’re not going to see them again. (We saw Ethan last week, and he died several seasons ago). Locke and crew have been flipping back and forth in time, completely out of control. If someone was able to control this, they could appear to live through time without aging. This might be the way Alpert is doing it.
So, what did you think of the episode?
You didn’t explain Jughead…
So an open question is what happened to the bomb? I’m willing to get that “The Hatch” is where it got placed, and that’s why the button had to be pushed every 108 minutes (perhaps the famous numbers were a special confirmation code of some sort to reset it’s clock?). I bet there were to be ramifications if a nuclear device were to interact with the properties of The Island (hence the “saving the world” aspect of the countdown clock). What I can’t understand with this theory is what the special failsafe mechanism that was eventually used to blow up the hatch would have done.
But, anyway, that’s my running theory.
Jughead was written on the bomb.
Has it been explained who Daniel’s father is? Taking your thought that “Elle” is Daniel’s mother what is Widmore was is his father? Widmore gets Elle pregnant and they are forced to leave the island so she can give birth and are unable to return. Maybe that is why Widmore funded Daniel’s research and is covering up his son’s mistake.
Maybe people dont age on the island or time flows slower on the island. Both could explain unaged Others and possibly the problem with pregnancies on the island. The human body has its own internal clock, so the body says the baby is ready, but not enough time has passed for the fetus to mature.
Or I’m crazy.
Michael, that’s definitely all possible and reasonable.
Anyone else pick up on the fact that Desmond and Penny’s son is Charlie? Is that named after her father or our late guitar hero (ba-da-bum!)…or…could time travel factor into things and this baby be our baby guitar hero (not likely, I admit)?
BTW, thanks Steve. I was trying to keep you honest with the title of your entry. 🙂
Yes, I picked up on the Charlie reference right away. I liked that a lot!
I sure hope Widmore isn’t Desmond’s father (I don’t think he is)… That would mean he and Penny were half/brother-sister , which would be too weird – even for Lost.
I could see Daniel being Penny’s half brother. I like Andy’s theory, but if there was already a leak in the device, does hydrogen degrade? Wouldn’t Desmond be a three-headed mutant living in close quarters with that thing? I dunno. My brain is on staycation, in a no-think zone!
I am not a nuclear scientist, but I had the same thoughts; if it’s leaking…he should have received a good dose of radiation just not.
And, really, who’s to say he hasn’t?
