Summer Viewing: The Island

Yeah, I should have started doing this at the beginning of the summer, but things were a bit hectic around here, so I couldn’t really do this until now.

Since we’re in REALITY TV land during the summer, it’s a good time to turn the dial around to other channels you don’t frequent, and to break out the DVDs you’ve been meaning to watch.

We recently wanted The Island, starting Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. It’s a couple of years old, so if you missed it, it’s worth a look-see.

I’ll give some thoughts about various things in the below, but be warned, there are some –

SPOILERS AHEAD

During the first scene, when Lincoln woke up from that weird dream, the first words out of my mouth were “Anakin? I just had the weirdest dream!”

Yeah, I kept thinking of Obi-wan Kenobi during the whole movie. I didn’t really help they had a scene on two floating craft that seemed a lot like those racers in the Luke/Leia/”little people in furry costumes” trilogy. It also didn’t help that at one point Lincoln goes off alone to shut down the generator for the complex – Oh, Obi-wan… Obi… Always shutting down those generators.

Oh, and those costumes sure had a “Logan’s Run” vibe.

END OF SPOILERS

I’m not going to say any more about the movie because, well, saying just about anything about the plot gives too much away.

Anyway, overall the movie was a good summer view. Check it out.

Did you see this movie? What did you think of it?

Fox’s Virtuality

Kali asks what I think about the upcoming Fox show from Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Gallactica”) “Virtuality”, starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Commander Frank Pike. The show’s about the starship Phaeton which is on a 10 year mission to a distant solar system. To keep the crew occupied, they use a series of modules that put them into virtual reality worlds. Everything goes great until a “bug” in the system starts messing things up.

(You can read further details at Reuters and at The Futon Critic).

Now this sounds like an interseting premise for a movie, and is very open ended for a show. It’s basically people playing around on Star Trek holodecks, although more like the Matrix, I suppose. At first glance the lack of direction for this show seems like it wouldn’t have a good focus, but remember this is coming from Ron Moore. A lot of people were surprised that someone would actually do a remake of “Battlestar Galactica” and even more surprised that it was a good show.

I’m still not certain. It has possibilities, but the open-endedness of this show really bothers me. Unless the show has a clear purpose, and it establishes it right from the start, I think people will be wondering where it’s headed. Trying to survive a 10-year journey doesn’t seem to be much of a premise.

I guess we’ll see.

(Thanks to Kali!)
