The Real Reason People Didn’t Like Nikki and Paulo

Lost Logo
Over on SCI FI Wire, the producers of LOST talk about fan reaction to Nikki and Paulo:

“People asked questions about the other characters on the beach,” Cuse said. “Are we ever going to learn anything about them?” In response, the writers expanded the storylines of Nikki Fernandez and Paulo (played by Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro). “But once we did it, people were angry that we were taking time away from our main characters and giving it to Nikki and Paulo, so we listened to the fans and decided to bury them alive,” Cuse added.

Wrong, wrong, wrong!

That’s not the reason people didn’t like Nikki and Paulo! We’ve had a TON of new characters on LOST, and a lot of them have been interesting. Take “Mr. Friendly”… Great character, love to know more about him. Richard Alpert? Same thing. Even the ill-fated Artz was a great character which people liked.

So what went wrong with Nikki and Paulo?

The real reason people didn’t like Nikki and Paulo is that they just seemed to pop up out of nowhere on the beach. They acted like a couple of kids trying to inject themselves themselves in the group. Viewers have been in that kind of social situation before, recognized it and reacted just like they do in real life – they didn’t want any part of it.

Sure, the characters felt that they were being left out of the action (and they even said that), but there are better and more subtle ways of bringing characters off the beach. Bringing them in more slowly would have given them more of an opportunity to slide into the show the right way. If the characters had been brought in that way, people would have probably liked them a lot more. Even if their fates had remained the same, it would have been OK… In fact, it probably would have had a much bigger impact.

The way the did come into the show was like being hit over the head with a shovel.

Guess Who’s Coming Back to LOST?

…SPOILERS AHEAD…

Guess who’s coming back to LOST? Cynthia’ Watros will be come back in her role as Libby in multiple episodes! Right now people are thinking that means she’ll be in flashback episodes. After last year’s finale, it could be a flash-forward. For all we know she could come back as a zombie.

Man, I hope not.

Anyway, it’ll be good to see how her whole story fits into the grand scheme of things. I suspect that Libby was a lot more sinister than we’ve been lead to expect so far.

LOST Producers Talk About the Five New Actors Joining in Season 4

New Lost Actors for Season 4
EW.com comes through again with a short interview with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse in which they discuss the five new actors joining LOST next season.

The producers talk about how they went about casting the new characters for the show, while not giving too much away while they were trying to find them. They don’t reveal who is going to be doing what on the show, but with character types such as “ruthless corporate recruiter”, let the speculation begin!

The interview was pretty surprising; I had no idea that Jeff Fahey at set up an orphanage in Afghanistan.

…and is it just me, or does Rebecca Mader look REALLY spooky in that picture?

Jeff Fahey Joins The LOST Cast

Jeff Fahey
Jeff Fahey, perhaps most famous for his roles in Lawnmower Man and Grindhouse, is joining the cast of LOST for season 4.

Here are some more of the people who are joining for season 4 of LOST: Jeremy Davies (Saving Private Ryan), Lance Reddick (The Wire), Ken Leung (The Sopranos), and British actress Rebecca Mader (The Devil Wears Prada, Love Monkey).

Any thoughts on what all these people are going to be doing? Off hand, I’d say most (if not all) are going to going to arrive on the island from that boat that’s floating around out there….

Season 4 Sneak Peek: Orientation Film For The Orchid

LOST SPOILERS AHEAD

I was finally able to find a copy of “The Orchid” orientation film that was shown at Comic Con, and I have to say that previous reports on what was in this video didn’t do what was actually happening justice.

Watch for yourself in this embedded video:

From what happened in this film, I think it’s pretty clear they’re trying to screw around with time in some way. “Edgar Halowax” (who we know was calling himself “Marvin Candle” in one of the other films) is REALLY freaked out about seeing that rabbit with the number 15 on it. He said that the two rabbits shouldn’t get near each other… Why would that be? Could there be some kind of paradox of two things from a time shift meeting each other? What would happen?

Another thing I noticed was this frame in the middle of the video:

Subliminal messages? What? Would the Dharma people do that? Nah…….

Update: More subliminal pictures

Here’s another… (Sure looks like Gerald DeGroot to me):

and another (the Hanso building?):

and one more (the Others compound?):

Comic Con: Lost Season 4 Spoilers & Analysis

Buddy TV and TVSquad are reporting on last night’s Comic Con with info on Lost Season 4:

SPOILERS AHEAD! Don’t read this if you don’t want to know!

Here are a few things that we were told by Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, the executive producers of LOST:

1) Michael will be back as a regular cast member in Season 4; it had been planned all along, and that “year off” for season 3 was planned. Harold Perrineau, the actor that plays Michael appeared on stage with Cuse and Lindelof.

2) It was strongly hinted (lots of head nodding) that Jack and Claire would find out they were brother and sister.

3) We’ll see more of Libby in a flashback, and a her possible ties to Dharma.

4) We’re going to find out definitively what the smoke monster really is at some point. Maybe not in Season 4, but definitely before the show is over.

5) Rousseau’s story will be told in a flashback in season 4 or 5, but things haven’t synced up correctly for her story yet.

6) Ben was NOT trying to get caught when Rousseau caught him in a trap. He was headed to the other side of the island.

7) The actor who played Tom, (“Mr. Friendly”…you know…the guy with the fake beard) M.C. Gainey, revealed that The Others might have looked bad, but what’s coming will be worse.

8) A movie was played showing Dr. Candle giving an orientation about the Orchid Station. He was holding a rabbit with the number 15 on it. A second rabbit, also with the number 15 got loose. He referred to something about the island’s “Casimir effect”.

9) Webisodes are coming before Season 4 premieres in February.

OK….with that out of the way, here are some of my questions about that:

1) Michael will be back, but what about Walt? In my previous theory about Walt, I said that something was going to have to happen to that actor, simply because a kid his age is going to go through some dramatic changes while he grows up. At that time, I thought that he would be part of the Dharma Initiative’s life expectancy experiments, but I think it’s pretty clear now that this has more to do with time than anything else. I say that based on the “flash forward” episode that ended last season. Are the people on the island stuck in time? Are they dramatically slowed down or sped up? Will we see this in Walt?

2) That Christian (Jack’s father) sure does get around. How are they going to find this out? Claire just mentioning it? Ben dropping the bomb?

3) Libby’s ties to Dharma – Could Charles Widmore have put Libby up to giving Desmond that boat, just to get him away from Penelope?

4) In my original theory, I thought that the smoke monster might be nanotechnology. At this point I’m not sure what it is. It’s probably something The Others let loose by accident.

5) Rousseau is extraordinarily well-armed for someone that was on a boat that got ship-wrecked. Do you remember Naomi, that woman that they found in the jungle last season? The one that had the radio?

I think Rousseau might be part of the same group of people as Naomi is a part of.

6) Where Ben was headed…. no idea.

7) I think that specifically refers to the people on the boat. They’re military, and it will probably force some sort of unsteady alliance between the survivors of the crash and The Others.

8) I have to think about the Casimir effect some more.

9) I’ll post links to any webisodes (and that Candle movie) when they become available.

Last Minute Lost Thoughts

  • I sure hope that the island they’re on isn’t “Atlantis”.
  • There are going to be a few (maybe more than a few) 815ers that get killed off tonight, and I’ll be sorry to see them go. Bernard, Jin, Sayid, Charlie, and maybe Sawyer are up on that chopping block… At least that’s my guess. All good characters. I think it’s also possible that Danielle will end up dying, but the only way I can see that happening is that she would sacrifice herself to save Alex.

My guess that at least one of those deaths is going to be pretty abrupt too, basically just walking up and killing someone with no advanced warning. That would make the loss of that character just that much worse.

  • I know a few people brought up the whole “virtual reality” idea, I’m still not seeing how the writers can plausibly explain it. I’m still going for the “Lost in Time” theory.
  • I think that somehow, the people on that plane were all put there for a reason. Who, and how…. no idea.

The Crash of Flight 815 And Why The Island Can’t Be Found

Wednesday night is the big LOST finale, so I thought I’d toss this theory into the mix:

When Naomi finally woke up enough to talk, she told Hurley that the passengers on Flight 815 died, and the wreckage was found. There’s no reason to think that she would be lying about something like that. I think they really did find the crash site of Flight 815, and that everyone on board died. And I bet if they recovered the wreckage, they would actually find the bodies of everyone that was on Flight 815 when it hit the water.

What? Does that mean that I think that the 815ers are in hell, purgatory, or are just a dream?

Not at all. I think this ties in with the whole mystery of why the island can’t be found, at least not easily.

I think the island is out of phase with the regular time line.

Think about this for a minute. If Flight 815 is about to crash, and it happens to be near an island that is out of phase with time, what could happen? I think that the timeline got disrupted so that the plane crashed on the island, and simultaneously another copy of the plane crashed into the water.

Two planes, different, but the same plane, just split because of the time distortion on the island. A time distortion like that would also explain why it’s so difficult for anyone to pinpoint where the island is. If the island is out of phase with the rest of reality, I don’t think anyone would be able to see it. They’d probably be able to pass over it, or even through it without knowing it was even there, because it really isn’t. It’s caught between cracks in time.

Who Is Going To Die Next Before The End of The Season?

OK, we have a couple of hours until the next episode of “Lost”, “Greatest Hits”, airs, and I got to thinking. A few people are supposed to die in the final episode. Probably a few in this upcoming episode too. My bets?

815ers:

Sawyer finally did what he wanted to do a couple of episodes ago, and killed the real “Sawyer”. The main thing he has at stake on the island now is his relationship with Kate. You can bet that if push came to shove and the camp was attacked, or Kate came within harm’s way, Sawyer will be there to try and save her. If that does happen, I don’t think he’ll survive.

Charlie’s luck has run out. Desmond isn’t going to be able to save him every time he cheats fate, and there are going to be a lot of opportunities to die coming up.

I hope that whoever dies, the writers make it a meaningful death, and not just a random shot. Those are shocking and have impact, but they always leave a “that was useless” feeling.

Others:

Mikhail nearly died once, but since the fence wasn’t set on full power, he didn’t die. I think he WANTS to die at this point, since he even thanked Locke for it when he got pushed in the first place.

That leaves Ben, Juliet, Richard and Tom. We really don’t know any of the other “Others”.

Juliet is still important, because she holds the key to helping the pregnant women on the island.

Richard was just revealed as one of the original “Others”, so I doubt he’ll be going any time soon.

That leaves Tom and Ben.

I like Tom’s character a lot, but since he doesn’t have anything compelling going on with the story right now, I think he’s a goner.

That leaves Ben.

I’m really on the fence about Ben. On the one hand, there’s probably a lot more story to tell, and there’s a nice conflict brewing between Locke and Ben. Yes, I think Locke will be OK, despite the bullet to the gut last week. Now, on the other hand, someone (or, after last week…. something) might want to get rid of Ben, realizing that Locke might be the one they were really hoping to get put in charge of things. If he does die, I think it’s pretty likely it’ll be at the hands of Locke. That will put Locke in the predicament of how to deal with Jacob, and what’s really happening on the island.
