LOST Theories – Smoke Monster or Not?

Spoilers ahead – Don’t read if you haven’t seen Across The Sea!

The episode “What They Died For” airs in a couple of hours.

There’s a theory going around that Mother, the woman that raised Jacob and The Man in Black, was actually a smoke monster herself. The main reason given is the destruction at the base camp where The Man in Black lived with the people he considered “corrupt”.

There are two sides of this. First, the “She wasn’t” argument:

We haven’t seen any outward signs from Jacob that he’s got some awesome power – except for bringing that storm up to bring The Black Rock onto shore. We haven’t actually seen him “turn on that power”. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have destructive power like that. If he did, Mother could have manifested it herself that way. In other words, not “Smoke Monster Evil”, but deadly none the less.

The “She was” argument:

The only way she could have taken out that many people was if she was a smoke monster herself. Also, her warning to Jacob may have been first hand knowledge of what happens to someone if they go down the Light Well. The body she inhabited may well have just been a physical representation (just like UnLock is), and therefore she really did have a body and a skeleton (which was found during the first season).

There really isn’t much to go on with these arguments other than that. The implications of it are interesting though.

LOST – Across The Sea

Spoilers ahead!

Just finished watching “Across the Sea”, and it was a good one. Here are my observations on tonight’s show:

Question answered: It was confirmed that Jacob and the Man in Black are brothers, as I early suspected.

It was left up in the air is how The Woman made it so they couldn’t kill each other. I think that’ll end up being one of the unanswered mysteries.

They were on the island about 43 years before Jacob hurt his brother and threw him down the Life Well (I’m gonna call it that, for lack of a better term).

Question answered: We got to see the origin of The Wheel.

I’m a little torn about this one: Can the Man in Black leave the island by turning the wheel now? Or is that something he could only do while he was alive?

Question answered: The skeletons Jack and Kate found were of The Woman and The Man in Black, not Adam and Eve or any of the LOST 815ers.

Question answered: We know the “inside joke” of the black and white stones.

How long after these events did it take for The Man in Black to appear to Jacob. How freaked out must Jacob have been at THAT happening?

A couple of theories:

It appears to me that what happened to the Man in Black was that all his inner “goodness” was absorbed by the Light Well, and all his “badness” was released. Not a good thing. I suspect Widmore is going to end up this way, because he doesn’t understand the true nature of what that Light Well can really do.

It really seems that Widmore (and the rest) aren’t really looking for magnetism. That’s just a byproduct of finding what they’re REALLY looking for, the source to the Life Well. That’s what they really need Desmond for… to be able to take whatever is the real source of that extreme magnetism and get it off the island. Desmond’s (probably) the only person that can get close enough to it, and not die.

That’s it for now. What did you think of tonight’s episode?

How To Kill A Smoke Monster

About that Smoke Monster/Man in Black/UnLocke…. whatever it is.

We’ve seen that Smoke Monster for six seasons now. The only thing we’ve seen stop it was that sonic fence. All that did was stop it from getting into the Dharma compound. It certainly didn’t do enough to kill it.

We’ve seen the Man in Black, disguised as Locke, take a knife right in the chest. He pulled it out, and didn’t have a scratch on him.

So, how in the heck do you kill someone/something like that? Everyone who’s shot at him have ended up being picked up, slammed against the wall and killed.

You know what? I think I figured it out, and we’ve seen the answer repeatedly over the whole season.

The secret weapon is Jacob’s ashes.

Think about it… what do you think would happen if a big plume of black smoke came barreling down on Hurley and he tossed Jacob’s ashes right into the middle of it? I’m guessing that it would turn into a HUGE problem for the Man in Black, and would very likely kill him.

What do you think? Off base? Right on? Have any better ideas? Let’s hear ’em in the comment section!

edit: After reading the comments, I should point out that I’m talking about the ashes of Jacob that Ilana gathered after Jacob’s death, not the ashes that were used by Dogen or the ashes that were around the cabin.
