The Man From Tallahasee

SPOILERS AHEAD – Don’t read this if you haven’t see this episode of LOST yet!

All in all, a great episode. Way back in October, in a posting called Is This Why Locke Ended Up in a Wheelchair?, I wrote about my theory that it was Locke’s father that had John beaten so badly that he ended up in a wheelchair. That was pretty darn close but, as we found out tonight, Locke’s father didn’t have it done…. He did it himself! Pretty brutally too, and not the way I expected. I always imagined it was a bus for some reason, but since they already did that this season to a much different conclusion, I suppose I shouldn’t have kept thinking that. What ended up happening was more shocking, that’s for sure.

Now the second part of the theory is that it was Locke’s father that was the same con-man that Sawyer is looking for. We’ll see if that comes to pass.

They also addressed (but didn’t answer….of course….) the question of why Ben got sick in the first place, when the island has some healing properties, which I know is a question on a lot of people’s minds. It was good to see that the show acknowledged this.

Ben is obviously REALLY interested in John, I think more for finding out why Locke was cured than because of his father. Knowing the twists and turns this show takes, it’s entirely possible that The Others brought Locke’s father to the island only to manipulate Locke, and the whole “box” story is just a story.

Let’s say for a minute that there really is something that can grab things out of no where and bring them to the island. It’s almost certainly not a box, because … well, that would just be weird. What would it be? If that statue with the four toes is real, then maybe what they found is some sort of ancient temple, stadium, or something that focuses the island’s energy and makes things happen.

Or maybe it really is a box. It’d be a darned big box though.

LOST: Par Avion

We found out a few things in this episode, and there was a spoiler in the preview for next week (more on that later).

“Par Avion” means “By Plane” in French.

We found out that Claire is indeed Jack’s half-sister, as I previously predicted here (and as many others have also suggested. We can add Claire to the list of survivors that have issues with their fathers. The question now is, why was Christian in Australia trying to see Claire just before his death? What did he want to tell her? Why did he travel all that way? Was she in danger?

The people working with The Others have a submarine they used to get to the island. The conversation that Kate and Mikhail had was pretty interesting. Mikhail said, “Two week ago, our underwater beacon stopped emitting it’s locater signal. There was an event. An electromagnetic pulse. It would be impossible to come back.” That means that there probably won’t be any help coming from the outside any time soon.

Mikhail knew the first and last name of Sayid, Kate and John. He was even able to spill the beans about John being paralyzed.

That fence that killed Mikhail wasn’t just built in time to keep the Flight 815 survivors out. It was probably needed to keep the animals out, and quite possibly to keep the people that were “recruited” (like Juliette) inside the fenced area.

John Locke’s purpose for coming along is more than just getting Jack back. He wants to confront Ben. (That was in the preview). Why he’s carrying C-4 in this backpack, I’m not as sure, but it’s not something that’s a good thing to just be carrying around like that.

Sawyer was reading The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. The Amazon.com description of that says that some of the themes are the struggle of good and evil, and the strength of the individual. “The strength of the individual” is particularly interesting in light of why Mikhail said Kate, Sayid and John were not on the list. Mikhail said, “You’re not on the list because you are flawed, angry, weak and frightened.”

Mikhail was wearing the same sort of jumpsuit that “Roger the work man” (the skeleton Hurley found) was wearing.

Claire finally found out about Desmond’s ability to see the future, and that Desmond has again saved Charlie from dying.

Jack seems content, just throwing the football around with Tom, which really shocked Kate. Has he gone over to “The Others”? Or is he just waiting for the opportunity to get out of there? Is Jack, “On The List”?

I think Jack is going to discover why The Others are there, and will start to try and help them do whatever they’re doing.

Mikhail’s and Ms. Klugh’s conversation

Lostpedia has a translation:

Klugh: Mikhail. Mikhail! You know what to do.
Mikhail: We still have another way [out].
Klugh: We cannot risk. You know the conditions.
Mikhail: There is another way.
Klugh: They captured us. We will not give (or let, or betray) [unintelligible].
Klugh: You know what to do. It is an order.
Mikhail: We still have another way!
Klugh (in English): Just do it, Mikhail.
Mikhail: Forgive me. (shoots)

LOST: Enter 77

Spoilers ahead… Don’t read this if you haven’t seen “Enter 77”

Very good episode. A few predictable things (notably the ending, after John entered 77), but overall, a good episode.

A few thoughts, based on what we saw tonight:

The One-Eyed Man, (I think his name was Mikael) was probably doing what he could to fix communications between the island and the outside world. The station was important enough that Ms. Klugh told The One-Eyed Man to shoot her so that Sayid, Kate and Locke wouldn’t have any leverage over them. Why would that be?

With no leverage over The One-Eyed Man, Kate, Sayid and Locke should have been in a weaker position. I think that’s what Ms. Klugh was counting on. I think she was trying to keep them from figuring out how to communicate with the outside world.

Sure, the communication links were broken, but sooner or later someone on the outside was going to figure that out and probably fix it. As far as the people who are in communication with The Others know, everything is status quo.

Are The Others keeping up a ruse? Trying to keep up appearances that whatever they’re working on is proceeding as planned?

I think that’s a reasonable explanation. Had Locke actually been able to communicate with the outside world, the people The Others had been communicating with would probably do something, and come to investigate. I think its entirely possible The Others haven’t told the outside world about the plane crash in the hopes that whatever they’re doing can proceed as planned.

Any other thoughts about why Ms. Klugh wanted The One-Eyed Man to shoot her? I don’t think she would have said a single thing about who she was, or why she was there, so I’m not sure what other explanation (than the one above) makes any sense.

Lost: Random thoughts about “Tricia Tanaka is Dead”

Spoilers Ahead Don’t read this if you haven’t seen tonight’s episode.

This is going to be more of ramble, rather than a theory or anything like that.

I’m really getting sick and tired of the LOST promos lately. Last week it was “We’ll uncover three big mysteries”, this week it was “Don’t miss the episode that everyone will be talking about tomorrow”…

There was no surprising revelation tonight, and no, I don’t count that Kate finding Danielle (the woman who spoke French from Season 1) to tell her about Alex as a “big surprise”. With the amount of time that we’ve seen Alex this season, I think it was pretty clear that Danielle would come back into the picture.

Desmond still seems pretty freaked out still, and I can’t say I blame him for that.

Locke and Sayid are still running around together, but there hasn’t been an explanation for that.

Sun told Jin she was just going to speak English now.

Kate and Sawyer didn’t really resolve anything.

I did like the fact that they showed Mr. Cluck’s getting demolished.

I guess the main point of the show centered around Hurley taking his father’s advice and “made his own luck”, by getting that car started. Nice coincidence with the tape playing “The House of Shambala” by Three Dog Night in the car. That was same song that Hurley was listening to the day his father left.

Is this a turning point for Hurley? Is it just a matter of the power of positive thinking? I would seriously doubt that, but I hope he turns into “happy Hurley”, because he’s a lot more fun that “depressed Hurley”.

The real question is, what was Roger doing out there, and where was the path or road he was originally driving on? The “Work Man” label on his jumpsuit was interesting… We have a little clearer picture now. Not every one of “The Others” has something to do with research or medicine. Up until last week, I’d assumed that Ethan was an “enforcer” type, not a doctor. Was Roger out there to pick up one of the packages that drop from the sky (Remember last season?)? Was he there to deliver beer to The Hatch? Seems kinda weird. Was that really material headed for recycling in the back of the van?

Next week looks interesting – the previews showed that they’re going to meet up with the man with the patch over his eye.

Not the best episode so far, but it was good to see a bit more about Hurley’s past.

Lost: Stranger in a Strange Land

I’m not sure what to think about tonight’s episode. The three “mysteries”, what happened to the people that were “taken”, what Jack’s tattoo’s mean, and ….well, I’m not even sure what the third mystery was supposed to be.

Anyway, just a few random thoughts: I thought it was interesting that both Jack and Juliet ended up being “marked”. I haven’t figured out what the symbol on Juliet means yet. If anyone has a link to the mark, or better yet, what it means, please post it in the comments.

“He walks among us, but he is not one of us” was an interesting message. The question is, was Jack’s girlfriend in Thailand someone that did those tattoos as some sort of punishment? Did she object because it was something only Thai’s (or perhaps someone in her religion?) were supposed to have?
Once marked, did he become an outcast because of what he did, or because of what it said?

So many questions….

Things you missed in “Flashes Before Your Eyes”

Things you missed in “Flashes Before Your Eyes”:

The quick flash of scenes that happened after the key was turned were of some of Desmond’s experiences on the island.

The clock next to Desmond’s bed read 1:08. (The hatch button had to be pressed every 108 minutes).

The microwave beeping noise is the same noise as the warning noise for entering the numbers.

The delivery person at the reception desk brings the package “for 815”. ( 4 8 15 ….hatch button numbers).

There’s a polar bear next to the upside-down Buddha in the artwork on Widmore’s wall, with the word “NAMASTE” written backwards at the top.

Charlie’s full name is “Charlie Hieronymus Page”. Hieronymus Bosch was a painter that lived between 1450-1516. (Remember the Hatch numbers? 15 16 were part of those).

The song playing on the jukebox in the bar is the same song Desmond played the first time we saw him in the hatch.

Desmond and Penny only get one picture from the photographer; Desmond and Penny both have a copy of that picture. Desmond has one of his own with him on the island, and Penny had on by her nightstand at the end of last season.

The Desmond Theory Revisited

Spoilers ahead for “Flashes Before Your Eyes”

I’m feeling pretty sick right now, so this isn’t going to be a long post.

I just watched the latest episode of LOST, “Flashes Before Your Eyes”, and thought if you haven’t read what I wrote last October already, go read A theory about what’s going on with Desmond. It’s not spot on, but it’s close.

Anyway, regarding tonight’s episode: I think that old woman in the store had been on the island before, and something similar happened to her…. she just didn’t go back.

Only Fools Are Enslaved By Time And Space

From Lost Easter Eggs comes a great find from “Not In Portland”.

Remember the scene where Karl is found strapped into a chair watching videos and listening to loud music? Someone figured out that if you play that backwards, you’ll hear the message “Only Fools Are Enslaved By Time and Space”. Thanks to SciFi2U.com for the clip!

How soon will be see an “Others Rebellion”?

Just a few more hours until LOST premieres, and with all the build up from the first six shows, how long will it be until we see an “Others Rebellion”?

What the heck is that? Well, we have Ben down on the operating table. Juliet is trying to get Jack to do away with Ben, which I don’t think will work. This was going to be her big power play, until Jack turned the tables on her and decided that he wanted to try to save Kate and Sawyer.

Now Juliet is in a bit of a mess: Does she save Ben, and ruin her plans? Does she do something that might get rid of Ben and really screw up her plans when it doesn’t work? Does she do something that might get rid of Ben and actually succeeds? How would the other Others react to THAT?

From the beginning we’ve seen that Juliet doesn’t like Ben’s iron hand in deciding things, or the way some of the Others follow him. We know that Alex isn’t very happy about what’s happened to her or her friend “Karl”. (Ben does still care about Alex though, and even asked about her before his surgery). Will Juliet enlist Alex to help get rid of, or at least keep Ben from being the leader of the Others?

Trouble is definitely brewing, it’s just a matter of when things come to a head.

The real question in my mind is, what if they do “overthrow” Ben? Will Juliet be the new leader? What happens if Juliet turns around and is worse than Ben?

That’s my bet. Somehow Juliet will take over, and whatever self-control Ben had, we will not see the same from Juliet.

Then the Lost castaways will really have something to worry about.
